An opening is not a seedbed
Removing brush can increase light at ground level, but several other conditions affect grass establishment. The amount of woody material, soil exposure, drainage, and intended grass use all matter.
Do not assume spreading seed over deep loose chips will produce the same result as a prepared seedbed. Walk the finished area and decide what preparation the planting plan needs.
Choose lawn, forage, or habitat
A lawn beside a house needs a different finish and maintenance routine from a pasture or a native planting. Select the use first so you do not buy seed for a site that cannot support the result you expect.
Soil testing can guide decisions about amendments. Use local extension or a qualified landscape or agricultural adviser for the species and establishment plan rather than relying on a universal lime, fertilizer, or seed recipe.
Address the physical finish
Inspect for stump remnants, roots, rough patches, and debris before mowing or preparing the surface. Identify areas where mulch needs redistribution or where another contractor must handle soil preparation.
Do not drive planting equipment over the site simply because the vegetation is gone. Confirm that the surface, slope, and access suit the machine and the task.
Monitor the right plants
The first green growth may include unwanted plants as well as the vegetation you want. Learn to recognize the returning problem species and keep notes about where they appear.
Plan how the new planting will be maintained through establishment. If treatment is needed around desired plants, have a qualified applicator choose the appropriate approach. The objective is successful establishment, not just making the ground look green briefly.
